Go with the flow in Trier, Germany: my kinda travel guide..

OK - so without any help of guidebook, here is what I came across and what I found myself enjoying in this pretty town of Trier, the oldest city in Germany (as they claim themselves), which I knew absolutely nothing about until I got here two days ago:

Staying at a clean and economical Youth Hostel located in a tranquil neighborhood just by the Mosel River and jog in the morning; visiting Karl Marx Museum (his birthplace) and only to find how lucky I was to have survived the world history class back in high school time 15+ years ago; visiting UNESCO World Heritages of Roman ruins and hearing the Trier Cathedral tolling at 18 o'clock; dining at bistros and wine cellar exquisite foods with some flavor of French cuisines over dry Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wine; listening to an oboist playing a glorious tune of "Ave Maria" and male-duo singing and playing accordions in a beautiful harmony on the street; spending hours - I mean, "HOURS" or "the whole afternoon" - at a pretty cafe where you can indulge yourself with a big piece of “Flockensahne” (a cream puff cake cafe) over two cups of coffee (ok - I would be honest, plus a few glasses of local wine), reading one of the most amusing yet reflective books to read on the road - "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert...

It was not that I had no interest in Luxembourg (which I was originally planning to visit for two days), but I guess I've got enough to justify my not-at-all planned three day-stay here.

Journey without a guidebook

Let me start with one quetion: has any of you traveled in a foreign city, for the very first time in your life, of which you have no piece of knowledge whatsoever, and in which you absolutely know nobody - without any sinlge guidebook in your hands?

OK - I admit that I did travel in Mexico City and Turkey with guidebooks in my hands - and just like anybody else, I was busy everyday sightseeing this place and that place, because these are the places my guidebooks tell me as "must-see when you are in this town." Not to mention it was still indeed real interesting and exciting cultural experiences which I found myself enjoying so much - yet I felt that maybe I felt obliged to visit those places because that what's my guidebook says, and obliged to feel that I have to be entertaining myself for all the money and time I invested for this journey...

But now, here I am, in a city called Trier, a small yet the oldest town in western part of Germany without any guidebook in hands feeling great. All I was told about this city was "Sayaka, maybe you can visit there because it is pretty" a night before (yes - until this morning, I did not know where I should be heading to) and I am feeling superb ever - I am enjoying the real sense and joy of freedom, not only from all social norms my home country and society have imposed on me but also from whatever crap guidebook can say. Now I feel that I am in full control of where I visit and what I do, a commander general with full authority on how my journey should be. Or in a better expression, I can be a painter or an artist, and color my white map of journey (or life) as I wish.

The longer you travel, the more you know what you really need and what you do not. After travelling good two and a half months, this is what I discovered - guidebook is not neccesarily a necessity after all. I can still find my way out and my way in wherever I go. And whatever I find on the way, I would remember it - just because it was I who discovered it without help of outside sources. If you are in need of any information you can easily resort to tourist information desk or internet -yes, it is THAT easy. Then why bother carrying heavy, chunky guidebooks with you?

As you continue travelling, your luggage becomes lighter day by day and you become to feel yourself lighter and stress-free as you go - this is for sure in my own term one of the beauties about travelling resides and why I enjoy travelling.

Or am I being the one who is talking craps?

(Greetings from Dusseldorf, Germany)

アムステルダムで世話になった友人R(別名Jamie Omoriver*シェフ)による手作りラム・ステーキ。

Would you fancy something to drink at a coffee shop? .... NOT in Amsterdam!

Amsterdam - wow, what an interesting place...a city where you feel the dynamism of living arts and music, a city where you can cycle and walk through beautiful parks, enjoy weekend shopping at market eating fresh fried shrimps and pickled herrings on Saturday afternoon, a city with no taboo what-so-ever and where "coffeeshop" does not mean a place to have a cup of coffee...

"Coffee Shop - Feels Good"- of course, the are not talking about Coca-Cola

Open-air public toillet in downtown....hopefully, for men only

Ladies and gentlemen, if you happen to be in this town and want to ask a pretty Dutch girl or cute boy out for a cup of coffee and not hemp, remember you are better off finding a "cafe".

Random quotes to remember the stay in Stockholm...

"Now at my age (mid-thirty), I feel like it is time for me to give and share something with others, instead of getting something for myself."

"Sayaka, we are not tourists. We are travellers."

"When people tell me they are jealous of me doing this travel, I always ask them a question, what about you? why don't you do it? Most people say many excuses for not doing the same, but it is their decision, it is their choice! In the end, realistically speaking, most people are afraid of losing what they have now or do not wish to risk it. But I make my decisions. Because this is my life and I know I am responsible for whatever I decide to do. We are brave, sayaka. You and I are brave to say "No" to what we've got; such as work, income, apartment, family, etc."

"Why did so many people have to die and I survived? (referring to her Tsunami experience) Ever since that time, I am always looking for the meaning of life. And I also try to enjoy every moment, every minute of my life - this is why I keep on traveling.

(All quotes made by a lady from Taiwan I met in Stockholm YH, a survivor of the Tsunami in Indonedia in Dec 2004, a life-time traveler with her own business, and one of the most beautiful persons I've met who seem to know what life is all about)

"Photography 'was invented' out of a desire to reproduce the world we see about us. It arises from the interplay of light, optics, technology and people - both observing and observed. The presence of photographer results in an image that appear to freeze a moment of reality."
